Woman Maoist leader surrenders in Bijapur

Bijapur: A wanted woman Maoist rebel, Sukmati alias Basanti, surrendered before the police in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh.

Sukmati worked as the head of the National Park Area committee of Maoists and had a bounty of Rs. 8,00,000 on her head. She was wanted for her involvement in an attack which killed three people.

Disillusioned by the system and practices of Maoists, Sukmati became a police informer in 2012.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), I.K. Eleseela, said that four other Maoists had also surrendered before the police.

“Influenced by the rehabilitation programme of the Chhattisgarh government, five Maoist rebels, who worked as members of their military platoons and in other capacities, have surrendered and all of them have been given a government job,” said I.K. Eleseela, Additional Superintendent of Police.
