Yakub Memon execution: Law functions on basis of evidence not ‘opinions’, says chief investigating officer

New Delhi: Reacting to protests against the execution of 1993 Bombay blasts convict Yakub Memon, the chief investigating officer in the case, O.P Chatwal on Sunday said that law functions on the basis of evidence and not ‘opinions’.

“Every person puts forth their opinions. But law functions on basis of evidences. Evidences were put forth in detail before the High Court and then the Supreme Court,” said Chatwal.

On Thursday, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi had alleged that Memon is being hanged only because he belongs to a particular religion and added that death sentences of those convicted in former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi’s assassination case were commuted to life imprisonment.

Yakub Memon has been sentenced to death for his role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts.

The Supreme Court had earlier this week rejected his last-minute appeal and upheld his hanging for July 30. (ANI)
