Youth killed, 5 injured as bus crashes into footpath

Kolkata: A youth died and five injured today when a bus hit them during evening rush hour in the central part of the city, the police said.

The incident happened when a Howrah-bound bus of the WBTIDC from Rajabazar lost control while taking turn at College Street-Surya Sen Street crossing and ran on the pavement hitting a few persons and crashing into a book stall there, DC Traffic, V Solomon Nesakumar, said.

Manirul Sardar (21) of Canning in South 24 Parganas district was badly injured following the accident and was declared “brought dead ” when taken to the Calcutta Medical College and Hospital, Nesakumar said.

Among the five injured and being treated at the same hospital, were Sanjay Kumar Pathak (50), a constable with the Muchipara Police Station, Ganesh Manna (42), Provat Kumar Saha (51), he said.

Two others Sujit Saha (48) and Debjit Poddar (21) were treated and discharged after preliminary treatment, the DC said adding the driver of the bus was arrested.
