New Delhi: India is protesting with nationwide stir against the CAA-NRC-NPR and false rumours claiming 65% Indians supporting the new Citizenship (Amendment) Act have emerged to mislead citizens.
As protests continue across the nation, 11 state CMs have rallied against the implementation of the National Register of Citizens in their respective states, the Print reports.
These 11 states account for 54 per cent of India’s landmass with 56 per cent of its total population.
PM Modi’s claims that no NRC has been discussed by his government has proved untrue, misleading since Home Minister Amit Shah, as well as President of India and other BJP leaders, have strongly declared NRC will be implemented across the nation no matter what may come.
The latest CMs to join the list are Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy of Andhra Pradesh and Shiv Sena party’s Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray.
Meanwhile, addressing a delegation of Muslim leaders, Thackeray said his government would not implement the CAA or the NRC, and insisted that no detention centres will be built in Maharashtra.
Shiv Sena a former ally of BJP has joined hands with the NCP and the Congress to form the government in the state, had previously voted in favour of the CAA in the Lok Sabha have abstained from voting in the Rajya Sabha.
Many other non-BJP states and even NDA allies have joined the protest against NRC.
Bihar
Bihar CM Nitish Kumar on 20 December said there was no question of implementing the NRC in his state.
Odisha
Naveen Patnaik, leader of the Biju Janata Dal that rules Odisha, has declined to hold the NRC in his state despite its 12 Lok Sabha and seven Rajya Sabha MPs voting in favour of the CAA in Parliament.
Clarifying his party’s support in favour onf CAA, Patnaik on 18 December said his party only supported thinking CAA has nothing to do with Indian citizens, and only deals with foreigners.
Punjab
Punjab CM Captain Amarinder Singh was one to take a stand this discriminatory bill even before it was passed CAA.
The CM on 7 December said CAA would not be allowed in Punjab and that NRC was against the democratic spirit of India.
Chhattisgarh
After Punjab CM stood up against NRC, CAA, Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel too said that his state had “no need” to implement it, and that it was secure from infiltrators. He reiterated on 23 December that the Modi government was harassing the general public by passing “vague” laws like the CAA, and said his state won’t support such “black laws”.
Kerala
The Left Democratic Front government headed by Pinarayi Vijayan oppsed the discriminatory CAA and the NRC since 12 December.
West Bengal
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee stood staunchly against the CAA and the NRC as soon as the Rajya Sabha passed the law on 11 December.
Rajasthan
Joining the protest, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot of the Congress addressed a rally in Jaipur declaring his state will not implement CAA-NRC.
Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath, on 23 December too vowed not to implement the CAA and the NRC in the state.
Delhi
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has not only opposed CAA NRC in parliament but also spoken out against it.
