14 AMU students booked after fracas on campus with Republic TV crew

LUCKNOW: Uttar Pradesh police booked at least 14 students of Aligarh Muslim University on sedition charges following a scuffle with the journalists from news channel Republic TV.

According to Scroll. in, an First Information Report against the students was filed based on a complaint by BJP Yuva Morcha district leader Mukesh Lodhi.

The FIR claimed that the students of AMU were indulge in shouting pro-Pakistan and anti-India slogans.

As per reported by The Quint, the female journos, Nalini Sharma and Sumaira Khanwere present at the prestigious Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) on Tuesday, 12 February to cover an event, entered the campus without any permission and making objectionable comment on the varsity.

This led to an altercation between reporter of Republic TV with the students of AMU prompting the local police to intervene.

Accodring to the union’s president, Salman Imtiaz, the university staff asked the crew to stop the reporting but they “continued with the aggression”. “This led to the disruption in the campus,” he said. “It was followed by a reaction from a well-armed gang of BJP terrorists who started beating AMU students and were beaten in defence.”

Sharjeel Usmani, a local student leader, alleged on Facebook that the Republic representatives had, on air, said that they were reporting from “the university of terrorists”.
