2 years’ imprisonment for temple thieves

Telangana: Two persons, who were arrested on charges of stealing gold and silver idols worth Rs 2,50,000 from three temples in Ameerpet village of Maheshwaram Mandal in September last year, were convicted by a local court at Maheshwaram and awarded 2 years imprisonment on Friday.

The arrested, identified as 55- year-old Sarangi Venkatesh and his brother, 48-year-old Sarangi Sanjeeva are both residents of Kothakota village in Wanaparthy district. The duo broke open the locks of Padmavati Mata temple, Ayyappa Swamy Temple and Lord Venkateswara Swamy Temple on the night of 15th September 2018 and stole gold and silver idols worth Rs 2, 50,000, the police said.

During the investigation, the Maheshwaram Police arrested Sarangi Venkatesh and Sarangi Sanjeeva on the 25th of the same month. The stolen property was recovered. Apart from the temple theft, Venkatesh and Sanjeeva were involved in various offences in the limits of Rachakonda and other parts of Telangana.

Since, the offenders have been indulging in committing thefts continuously in the limits of Nalgonda district, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda police Commissionerates, they were detained under the PD Act by the Commissioner of Police, Rachakonda on 22nd December 2018.

On Friday, the local court at Maheshwaram, convicted Venkatesh and Sanjeeva and awarded them with 2 years’ imprisonment and imposed a fine of rupees 500 each in the temple robbery case.
