Ariana Grande opens up about how split with Pete impacted ‘Thank U, Next’

Washington: American singer Ariana Grande recently revealed that there were three versions of her latest hit song ‘Thank U, Next’ and opened up about how her split with ex-fiancé-comedian Pete Davidson impacted the track’s lyrics.

The pop singer recently appeared on the ‘Zach Sang Show’ and talked about how her split with Pete, reported E! Online.

‘Thank U, Next’ includes Pete’s name as well as her other ex-boyfriends Big Sean, Ricky Alvarez and late rapper Mac Miller. The track was released in November, a month after she and Pete ended their brief engagement.

Ariana had told her fans on Twitter that Sean and Ricky had heard the track even before it was dropped. In the recent interview she informed that Sean and Ricky both loved the song.

“Everyone that I am still in touch with has been very supportive of it,” Ariana said in the interview.

She also hinted that she and the comedian are not in touch.

Ariana talked about how the song had three different versions and even referred to her broken engagement.

In the first version, Ariana sings, “Thought I’d end up with Sean / But he wasn’t a match / Wrote some songs about Ricky / Now I listen and laugh / Even almost got married / And for Pete, I’m so thankful / Wish I could say ‘thank you’ to Malcolm / ‘Cause he was an angel.”

She had recorded two alternate versions of the breakup track including one without the names.

“I was also trying to be protective. In my relationship [with Pete] at the time, things were like up and down and on and off, and so I didn’t know what was going to happen and then we got back together, so I had to make a different version of it, and then we broke up again, so we ended up going with that verse,” she said.

“There’s a version where I was getting married, there’s a version where I’m not getting married, there’s a version with nothing—we’re not talking about anything. But we all knew that the first version was gonna be the version we ultimately went with,” she added.

Ariana added, getting a little emotional, “At the end of the day, these are people and relationships. It’s real s–t to me. It is real life and I spent a lot of time with each of those people…it was like scary to put in a song.”

Ariana’s split with Pete was followed by some public drama. When the 25-year-old comedian made headlines in December by posting a seemingly suicidal note on Instagram and then deleted his account. Ariana reached out to him on Twitter to offer support and even rushed to the show’s studios to see if he was okay, but he refused to meet her.

He has since appeared to recover and has also moved on in his love life. He was recently spotted out with actor Kate Beckinsale.

Ariana has also written about Pete before, her previous album ‘Sweetener’ features a song called ‘Pete Davidson’.
