Assam: Massive protests against Citizenship Ammendment Bill

GUWAHATI: Activists, opposition parties and people from different walks of life staged a massive protests against the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB), which is likely to be tabled in the Lok Sabha on Monday.

Earlier in the day, all Assamese Students Association protested against the Bill and the Sonowal-led government.  

They shouted slogans and anti-CAB posters were also pasted outside the residences of Chief Minister of Assam.

Students also showed placard written, ‘Say no to CAB’ and ‘Oppose CAB’ at the protest site.

The North East Students’ Organisation (NESO), All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Congress and the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) stage a protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill.

The Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT), an ally of the ruling BJP in the State including SFI, DYFI, AIDWA, AISF, AISA and IPTA, calls 12-hour shutdown in Tripura on December 9 in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) areas on the same issue.

IPFT, the junior ally of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, has been agitating since 2009 for the creation of a separate state for the indigenous tribals by upgrading the TTAADC, which has jurisdiction over two-thirds of Tripura’s 10,491 sq km area, and home to over 12,16,000 people, mostly tribals.

The ruling BJP, the opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist, the Congress and Tripura’s oldest tribal-based party Indigenous Nationalist Party of Tripura (INPT) have been strongly opposing the IPFT’s separate state demand.

Another tribal based party, Twipraland State Party, also observed a 12-hour shut down on Monday

For the very first time there is a silent protest against the NRC and the CAB silent protest held in Hyderabad in which the people from all religions and economic backgrounds participated.

CAB, which seeks to give Indian citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians if they entered Indian from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh or before December 31, 2014.
