CAA-Bharat Bandh Live: 1 killed, 18 injured, 250 detained

New Delhi: Several organizations have called for a Bharat Bandh against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the National Register of Citizens (NRC) on Wednesday. The Bharat Bandh has been announced by Bahujan Kranti Morcha, which is also supported by many Dalit organizations. On Tuesday, #Kal_Bharat_Band_Rhega was trending on Twitter. Several protesters have been reported injured and many others have been detained across the country.

1 killed and 3 injured in Bengal

One person was killed and three others were critically injured on Wednesday when an anti CAA-NRC protest in Murshidabad’s Jalangi area turned violent.

The local residents’ forum was observing a bandh in the area when a convoy of cars, led by local Trinamool Congress block president Tahiruddin Sheikh, reached the spot and allegedly fired upon the protesters. Several two-wheelers and cars were ransacked and set on fire.

15 people injured in Sitamarhi, Bihar

A clash broke out between two groups – one protesting against CAA and National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the other supporting it, in Sitamarhi, Bihar, today. 15 people were injured in the clash. Police personnel have now been deployed in the area.

Over 250 protesters detained in Pune

Over 250 protesters have been detained in Pune city till now, over their protest against CAA and NRC, in support of the ‘Bharat Bandh’ called by multiple organizations today, against CAA and NRC, says Pune police

A large number of protesters, including Muslim women, reached Jantar-Mantar on Wednesday. While addressing the public at Jantar Mantar, activist Tapan Bose said that Pakistan is not an enemy country, the ruling class of India and Pakistan are the same. He also said that the Indian Army is the same as the Pakistani Army because their army kills their people and our army kills our people, there is no difference between them.

In the wake of the Bandh, the Muslim women, who have, for the last 40 days,  been protesting against CAA and NRC in Shaheen Bagh will today, march at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. During the march, some of the Shaheen Bagh’s women will address the protesters. 

Mumbai protesters stage rail roko

Anti-CAA protesters, on Wednesday morning, forced a train to halt at Kanjurmarg. Sources have suggested that the trains on the central route are running late today due to the ongoing protests. However, the fast line traffic is said to be normal right now.

At least 100 protesters gathered on the tracks at the railway station around 8 am and stopped CSMT-bound slow trains, police said.

Thet raised slogans and waved the National Flag.

The protesters were later removed by the police and detained.

Due to the disruption, the services on the CR line are running late by 10-15 minutes, an official said.

“Suburban UP Slow train on Central_Railway stopped at Kanjur Marg station by a mob of people. However DN slow, Fast lines traffic is normal,” said Shivaji Sutar, Chief PRO, CR.

“We request people not to stop trains and cooperate us for smooth operation of suburban trains,” Sutar said.
