GHMC to simplify C&D waste management process for Hyderabadis

Hyderabad: To reduce, reuse, and recycle the Construction and Demolition (C&D) waste, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation agreed to form a public private partnership with the Ramky Group.

According to GHMC officials, the proposed Construction and Demolition waste management facility will be constructed on 17 acres of land across two sites: Jeedimetla Industrial Park in Gajularamaram Village and Quthbullapur Mandal in Medchal District.

Construction for this will commence shortly.

Executive Engineer (EE) – Soil, Waste Management, Srinvias Reddy, said, “The proposal seeks to manage all the C&D waste generated in and around Hyderabad while processing it in a scientific way. 500 tonnes of waste per day will also be utilized to make green and eco-friendly products through wet processes.”

“The Construction and Development waste can be used as low-level filling sub-base for road construction, and etc. After the waste gets segregated, this material can be used to make pavement blocks, precise products (compound walls and precast pillars),” stated Mohan Reddy, the EE – C&D.

The GHMC proposes to establish such projects in three other places in the city so that the C&D waste can be treated properly. In order to facilitate the waste management process for citizens, the GHMC is in the process of identifying around 300 places where the citizens can dump the material in a nearby container that transports it to the C&D plant for recycling.

The officials say that the C&D plant will be managed by contractors appointed by the agencies provided they are registered with the GHMC to transport C&D waste. So far, the C&D has collected 2, 17,000 tonnes this year at Jeedimetla plant.
