Google disables snoopy iOS app, apologises

California: After Facebook’s controversial ‘Research App’ was reported, Google disabled its private iOS app that snooped on a user’s iPhone usage.

The app, Screenwise Meter, gave users gift cards in exchange for tracking their internet usage data. As Engadget reports, the iOS version of the app operated under Apple’s developer enterprise program, which allows distribution
of apps with special privileges to be used only by a company’s employees.

Google has disabled the app on iOS devices and apologized for the mistake. The company stressed that the app is completely voluntary and that it doesn’t have access to encrypted data in apps on devices.
