Govt. orders transfer of officer who sought enhancement of sentence against Kathua convicts

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir Government ordered the transfer of officers including Mr. Ahfad-ul-Mujtaba.

According to the report published in Indian Express, Mr. Mujtaba played a key role in securing the conviction of accused persons who were involved in rape and murder of a minor girl in Kathua.

It may be mentioned that Punjab and Haryana High Court is going to hear the appeal of the convicts soon.

The transfer of Mr. Mujtaba triggered controversy as the Crime Branch had sought enhancement of sentence for the convicts. It had also recommended the government to challenge the acquittal of one of the accused of the case.

It may be recalled that Mr. Mujtaba had constituted a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate Kathua rape and murder case.

However, Mr. K. Vijay Kumar, Advisor to J&K Government said that there is no link between Mujtaba’s transfer and Kathua case.

It may be mentioned that Mr. Mujtaba has been posted as MD, J&K Police Housing Corporation.
