Hyderabad: The surroundings of the historic monument Charminar in Hyderabad have turned into a garbage bin. The waste generated by the hawkers and by those visiting the area is causing the problem of littering.
Despite the fact that bins were given to hawkers and shopkeepers to encourage the use of a bin so that plastic and other waste generated goes into the bins, the waste is seen on the road.
The GHMC had earlier appealed to the visitors to Charminar to use the dustbins and vendors were asked to stop selling food in plastic bags, as the GHMC is looking at a plastic-free city by 2020.
There are two teams of 15 sweepers deployed to clear the litter. The morning team works from 6 am to 1 pm, while the second team from 2 pm to 9 pm.
According to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation officials, the quantum of waste generated is around five tonnes, littered by those visiting the area and hawkers, the waste generated doubles on weekends.
