Hyderabad: Post Ganesh immersion, GHMC was left with the unenviable task of disposing of nearly 8,000 metric tonnes of garbage virtually carpeting the city on Friday. More than 4,500 metric tonnes of garbage are generated every day.
However, since Thursday GHMC collected additional 8,000MT garbage and moved it to 17 transfer stations in the city. About 55,000 idols were immersed in 35 lakes and
Hussain Sagar.
This includes about 32,800 idols in the limits of Hyderabad City Police Commissionerate, 12,000 in Rachakonda, and 10,116 in Cyberabad limits. More than 15,000 idols were immersed in Hussain
Sagar alone. This year, 10,000 idols were immersed additionally compared to last
year.
A meeting was held by GHMC and city police on Thursday to celebrate the overall success of the immersion programme.
GHMC Commissioner Lokesh Kumar said that over 20,000 idols were immersed in
the 23 specially designed immersion ponds that had been built as part of the drive to prevent pollution of lakes.
These immersion ponds would be used again for the upcoming Bathukamma celebrations.
The Commissioner said that immersion ponds would be cleared and, in order to avoid breeding of mosquitoes, gambusia fish would be used and anti-larval operations taken up.
GHMC engaged approximately 9,849 sanitation workers across 391 km length of immersion route.
Mayor Bonthu Ram Mohan, said, “On Thursday, 11,000 sanitation and entomology staff have worked hard for the upkeep of sanitation”. He appreciated the efforts of GHMC officials for their efficient handling of 55,000 statues and sanitation work.
During the Ganesh immersion, GHMC distributed 2 lakh basil and flowering plants free of charge at several Ganesh Mandapas in the city.
