Hyderabad: Court sends husband to 5 yrs jail in dowry death case

Hyderabad: A LB Nagar ADJ court has sentenced a man to five years of imprisonment for harassing his wife for more dowry and driving her to commit suicide.

During the trial on Monday the court has convicted Bashakarla Ramu for the offences under Sections 304-B of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

According to the prosecution, relations between the deceased Someshwari and her husband Ramu were not cordial. She was being harassed by her husband over more dowry.

The couple got married in 2009. They have a child. Someshwari committed suicide in 2014 by hanging herself to the fan in her home after quarreling with her husband.

The victim’s mother alleged that her daughter’s husband had demanded money. He had already been given 1 gunta equals to 1,089 sqft land located at Danthalapally village of Warangal District. The mother added that she and her husband had also promised to give money he was demanding by selling away the leftover land. The accused did not listen to them.

One day the husband quarreled with his wife over dowry and left the house. Upset over perpetual nagging for more dowry Someshwari went into her bedroom and hanged herself to the fan.

Ch. Chennaiah, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Malkajgiri Division, arrested the accused and remanded him to judicial custody.  Following the completion of investigation he filed a charge sheet in the court.

During the trial, XIII ADJ convicted the accused Bashakarla Ramu, 22, and resident of Ghatkesar to rigorous imprisonment.
