Hyderabad: Hospital Doctors, driver arrested

Hyderabad: A sex determination racket running in the city was busted by Chaitanyapuri Police after it acted upon a complaint lodged by district medical & health office (DMHO) officials.

Doctor Sarala and Ayesha Fatima of Ushodaya Hospital, Attapur, and an auto-rickshaw driver, Anjaneyulu were arrested on Thursday, TOI reports.

According to reports, DMHO officials received a tip-off that the accused driver and few others were acting as agents in helping couples determine the sex of the foetus.

The accused driver used to take the interested pregnant women to the accused doctors for the determination of the sex.

After Anjaneyulu was arrested, his confession to the Chaitanyapuri police led to the arrest of the two doctors.

“The two doctors confessed that they performed sex determination tests. We could find three women on whom the tests were earlier performed. Anjaneyulu had been collecting Rs 9,000 from each patient. Anjaneyulu and his associates used to take Rs 6,000, while they used to give the remaining Rs 3,000 to the doctors,’’ Chaitanyapuri inspector R Saidulu told TOI.

The three individuals have been charged under Sections 420, 406 of the IPC and Section 23 of The Preconception and Prenatal Diagnostics Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Determination) Act.
