Jamia violence: Delhi police release pictures of 70 suspects

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police have released the pictures of 70 suspects wanted in connection with the December 15 violence on the Jamia Millia Islamia campus here, an official statement said on Wednesday.

The SIT of Delhi Police Crime Branch zeroed in on the suspects on the basis of CCTV footage of the violence indulged in by them under the garb of protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, police added.

Police have since visited the houses and other suspected hideouts of the accused, who have gone underground, the statement said.

However, the police confirmed that the arrested individuals in connection with the conflict were not students and had a criminal background.

On December 15, last year, protests in the national capital against the amended citizenship Act turned violent.

Buses were set ablaze, more than 100 public and private vehicles were damaged in stone-pelting and arson in Jamia Nagar and New Friends Colony.

The Delhi police had later forcefully entered the university campus, fired tear gas shells and allegedly baton-charged several students of Jamia Millia Islamia.
