Kashmiri academic, activist Gilani passes away

New Delhi: Syed Abdul Rahman Gilani, former professor of Arabic, Zakir Hussain College, New Delhi, following a heart attack.

Delhi police had implicated Geelani in connection with the parliament attack case in 2001. But  Supreme Court exonerated him of all the charges.

He is survived by a wife and two daughters.

He had organized a program to register protest against the death sentence given to Afzal Guru.

Mr. Gilani was implicated in the sedition case but Delhi High Court had exonerated him for lack of sufficient evidence.

It may be noted that Mr. Gilani’s advocate, Ram Jethmalani had remarked that the observations made by the Supreme Court are most unfortunate. He had also said that it would affect Mr. Gilani’s career but the Supreme Court had set aside Mr. Jethmalani’s plea.
