Labelling BJP MP ‘Dalit’, villagers stop him from entering

Bengaluru: BJP MP A Narayanaswamy was not allowed to enter a village in his own constituency for hailing from a different caste, reports said.

The BJP MP was visiting turned away by the villagers when he was visiting the area along with a group of doctors and officials of a pharma company, Indiatoday reports.

According to reports, the incident took place on Monday in Pavagada taluk of Tumkur district when the minister was in the area to take a tour of the area.

The MP coming from the so called ‘untouchable’ caste was humiliated by the Golla community when the group tried to enter the Gollarahatti (a place where people belonging to the Golla community lives).

He was also asked to never enter the village as no Dalit or lower caste members are allowed to enter the Gollarahatti. While Narayanaswamy is a Dalit, the Gollas belong to the Other Backward Class (OBC).

The MP was also reminded that no Scheduled Caste community member has ever entered the village and will never be allowed to do so.

A furious MP had to return back while the police have ordered an inquiry.

“We are looking for the individuals. I have ordered the inspector to give me a report. We only know that he was stopped by a few people as he belonged to a different community,” said the SP reporting on the case.

However, Karnataka Deputy CM CN Ashwath Narayan condemned the incident and said: “If the MP was stopped from entering Gollarahatti then I condemn it. Action must be taken. We all are the same, there should be no discrimination. We are of same flesh and blood.”
