KALABURAGI: A massive protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR) took place at Peer Bangali Ground in Karnataka’s Kalaburagi  (Gulbarga).

According to police estimate, about 70,000-75,000 people were present for the four-hour long event refuting the claim that more than three lakh people gathered from different cities and districts in Jan Andolan programme to register their protest.

The protest saw not only the participation of Muslims but leaders of different communities and people from all walk of life and religion also gathered to raise their voice against the unjust CAA-NRC-NPR.

Trustee Dargah Bandanawaz Gesudaraaz Muhammad Muhammadul Hussaini is seen with Social and Human Rights Activist Swami Agnivesh at the protest rally which was attended by scores of eminent personalities.

The protesters also took a pledge to not to implement and boycott the controversial CAA-NRC-NPR.

CPM General Secretary Sitaram Yechur also participated and spoke against CAA and NRC.

Accusing the BJP-led NDA government of polarising the people, Yechury said in Hindi that CAA and NRC were designed to isolate deprived communities and make them feel like “paraiah” (outcast) within the country.

“The intention of CAA and NRC is to isolate Muslims, Dalits, Adivasis, nomadic tribes and downtrodden communities, which have been marginalised and suppressed,” Yechury said.

Protests broke out in different parts of the country against and in support of CAA which excluding Muslims, grants citizenship to Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, Parsis, Buddhists and Christians fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh and who came to India on or before December 31, 2014.
