MANUU students write to KCR, demand resolution against CAA

Hyderabad: Shooting off a letter to Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, students of the Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), Hyderabad demanded that the state’s Legislative Assembly pass a resolution against the Centre’s controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the National Population Register (NPR).

Students’ union claimed that CAA goes against the spirit of the Constitution which guarantees equality before law without prejudice to religion, race, caste, sex, and place of birth or any of them. The MANUU students’ union asserted that the newly-designed National Population Register (NPR) ‘is creating distress and anxiety among the common people and is considered to be the first step towards NRC.

Citing the failure of NRC in Assam the students union in the letter noted that CAA, NRC and NPR are against the Indian Constitution and threat to secular ethos of this country. They felt the country needs to register unemployed youths and uneducated children instead of carrying out NRC and NPR.

The letter pointed out that ‘taking same concerns into account, the Kerala and Punjab have passed resolution in Assembly against CAA and have notified not to carry out the NPR.’

The students requested KCR to take firm decision to stop CAA, NRC and NPR and defeat the divisive agenda of the communal forces in the larger interest of the nation.

The students’ union reportedly sent the letter to nine non-BJP ruled state chief ministers, requesting all of them to pass Assembly resolutions against CAA and NRC.

Though the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) had voted against the CAA in Parliament, Telangana CM KCR is tightlipped on implementation of CAA-NRC-NPR in the state. However, state Home Minister Mahmood Ali, ahead of municipal corporation elections had said that NRC will not be implemented the state.
