Mohammed Azam gets bail after spending 6 months in jail

New Delhi: Mohammed Azam, aged 35, who spent six months and six days in the custody of National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Tihar Jail finally received bail from the NIA Court.

According to the report published in Hindustan Times, he was arrested for alleged links with a pro-ISIS module ‘Harkat-ul-Harb-e-Islam’.

It may be mentioned that on 26th December 2018, five persons were arrested. Out of these persons, Azam and three other persons were granted bail on Tuesday.

During the hearing of bail plea, the agency informed the court that the four accused persons are not named in the chargesheet due to lack of sufficient prosecutable evidence. The agency did not object to the bail plea.

It may be recalled that the arrest was made after the NIA carried out searches at 17 places, including six places in East Delhi’s Jafarabad area, six places in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha, two places each in Lucknow and Hapur and one place in Meerut.

The agency had claimed that it recovered pistols, explosive chemicals etc.

After getting bail, Azam said that his personal, professional and social life had come to a halt six months back. “I am trying to restore normalcy”, he added.

It may be noted that earlier, he used to run a pharmacy. After the arrest, he was in NIA custody for 12 days. Later, he was shifted to Tihar Jail.

Recalling the days in Tihar Jail, Azam said that his family members used to lie to his 6-year-old daughter that he got a job in a medicine manufacturing factory.

In Tihar jail, he used to spend maximum time in the library.

Azam disclosed that other suspects used to visit his pharmacy to buy medicine only.

His father, Hafiz Ahmad recalled that at the time of arrest, police had informed that Azam will be released in two hours.
