Mood of the Nation: BJP would lose majority if polls held now

New Delhi: The BJP-led NDA government would lose more than 50 seats from its May 2019 tally if the elections were held today, reveals the latest edition of the India Today ‘Mood of the Nation’ survey.

According to the survey, BJP would get 271 as against 303 seats won by it in the 2019 elections. And it would be reduced to, one less than the majority mark. On the other hand, the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance would get 108 seats, 15 more than it actually won.

However, the survey revealed that Narendra Modi remains the most popular leader in the country but fell down three percent than the previous edition of the India Today ‘Mood of the Nation’ survey, which was released in August 2019.

Home Minister Amit Shah emerged as the best performing minister in the Modi government according to the ‘Mood of the Nation’ survey.

The survey was conducted in 19 states, across 97 parliamentary constituencies and 194 assembly constituencies. The survey was carried out from 21 December to 31 December 2019.

The respondents believed that Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath was the best-performing CM in the country, followed by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal and Bengal’s Mamata Banerjee, who tied for second, while Bihar CM Nitish Kumar is placed third.

60 per cent of the respondents had a negative outlook towards the Indian economy, with unemployment being the biggest concern. A majority of them believed that the Modi government’s handling of the economy has hampered the BJP’s image.

58 per cent of the respondents favoured the scrapping of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and reorganisation of the state and a majority of them think the Supreme Court’s Ayodhya judgment was fair and in favour of both parties.

41 per cent feel Citizenship Amendment Act will help persecuted minorities from neighbouring countries. And 49 per cent believe nationwide National Register of Citizens is a good step for Indian democracy.

On the other hand, 52 per cent agree that minorities are feeling insecure about the combined effects of CAA and a nationwide NRC. And 53 per cent believe that the insecurity among minorities is justified. 42 per cent of the respondents feel that the recent student protests seen in the country have led to the BJP government losing the connect it had with the youth.
