‘0’ in ‘NEET’ but got the MBBS seat!

NEW DELHI: Be careful if you visit are unknown doctors! You might be trusting someone who got the admission into a MBBS course with zero marks.

The reason is the details highlighted in a Times Of India report which is appalling as 1,990 candidates who got admission into an MBBS course on their NEET (National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test) score last year,  scored less than 150/720 (20.8%).

Also, at least 530 students who scored single-digit marks or ‘0’ or negative marks in Physics and Chemistry or both in the entrance exam still got admission.

Interestingly, of these 530, 507 candidates got admission into private medical colleges to pursue MBBS course.

Poor students are being left out as the rich students who can afford an average tuition fee of 17 lakh per annum find their way into medical colleges despite securing negligible marks, the report concludes that in NEET.

A change in the notification issued by Medical Council of India (MCI) in February 2012, is believed to be the reason for this. The subsequent MCI notification dropped the minimum marks requirement and introduced the percentile system.
