Chikkamagaluru: A 20-year-old committed suicide after being accused of having a friendship with a Muslim boy and sending pro-Muslim WhatsApp messages.
A local BJP Yuva Morcha president identified as Anilraj was arrested in connection with the suicide case.
The girl identified as Dhanyashree committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence in Mudigere town near Chikkamagaluru on Saturday afternoon.
According to reports, after being question over caste and religion while chatting with her friend Santhosh on WhatsApp, Dhanyashree had replied in support of Muslims.
Santhosh gets infuriated after seeing Dhanyashree’s pro-Muslim messages and warned her.
He also took the screenshot of conversation between him and Dhanyashree that contained messages reading “I love Muslims” which was circulated widely through social media platforms.
Santhosh later took screenshot of their conversation and shared it with local Bajrang Dal and VHP members.
On Friday evening, Anil, the BJP youth wing leader including other four visited her house and picked up a quarrel with the girl and her mother threatening her against befriending Muslims.
The pro-Hindu activists also shared the photos of the girl and with a guy from another religion which was circulated widely through social media platforms.
Dhanyashree, a B.Com student of Mudigere’s D S Biligowda government was upset over the development and committed suicide the next day leaving behind a death note.
“The five people had been to her home on Saturday evening and picked up an argument with the girl and her mother. The group had alleged that the girl was roaming with a Muslim boy and thereby she had become the cause of issues like Love Jihad. Upset over the development she committed suicide”, Chikkamagaluru Superintendent of Police K. Annamalai told presspersons, reported The Hindu.
Police have arrested Anil and is on the lookout for the main accused Santhosh and others.
