50% Reservation in Panchayat Polls, Ordinance issued

Hyderabad: Telangana Government today issued an ordinance by making an amendment to Panchayat Raj Act for 50 per cent of reservations for panchayat raj and other local bodies elections in the state. The ordinance gets importance as the High Court issued orders to complete the panchayat elections by January 10 next year.

The State government was facing a problem with regard to provide reservations to various categories. SCs, STs getting reservations and BCs 34 percent totalling to 60 per cent. In the wake of Supreme Court order not to exceed 50 per cent reservations, the State government has taken a key decision in this regard. And it brought a new ordinance by amending the previously launched Panchayat Raj Act for 50 per cent reservations. Thus it cleared the way for panchayat polls.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao held a high-level meeting on this at Pragathi Bhavan in the presence of Chief Secretary SK Joshi, government advisor Rajiv Sharma and other officials. The officials issued an ordinance was passed as KCR directed.
