82 Cr people in the world going hungry: 2018 Global Hunger Index

According to the 2018 report hunger is both a cause for and effect of flight and displacement. Rates of hunger, are twice as high as in the rest of the world, in countries experiencing armed conflicts.

Berlin: According to the new Global Hunger Index (GHI), which assesses the nutrition situation in 119 countries, the number of people going hungry rose to 821 million.

Bärbel Dieckmann, President of Welthungerhilfe has attributed the figures to violence, conflicts, and the effects of climate change which cause flight, displacement, and hunger. He stressed the need for sustainable political solutions to global conflicts in order to definitively defeat hunger.

According to the 2018 report hunger is both a cause for and effect of flight and displacement. Rates of hunger, are twice as high as in the rest of the world, in countries experiencing armed conflicts. The report also pointed out that over 68 million people worldwide are living as refugees.

GHI scores have improved in countries like Angola, Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Myanmar in 2018 with an improvement of more than 45%. Where as 16 countries either made no progress or regressed. Africa South of the Sahara was found to be continuing with highest hunger rates.
