New Delhi: Scores of women and youth workers of the Aam Aadmi Party today staged a protest near Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s residence alleging women’s safety was “worsening” by the day in the national capital.
The protestors, led by the party’s women MLAs including Bhavna Gaur, Sarita Singh, Rakhi Birla, Vandana Kumari, and Alka Lamba, alleged that the Home Ministry, which controls the city’s law and order, has failed in its duties.
“The situation is worsening by the day but the Prime Minister and the Home Minister seem unmoved. The protest was staged to send across the message that AAP will not allow any compromise when it comes to women’s safety,” Gaur, who heads AAP’s women’s wing, said.
The politics over women’s safety has heated up in the city in the wake of the death of a 14-year-old Dalit girl after being repeatedly sexually assaulted. Another case of an alleged rape of a four-year-old girl was reported yesterday.
The protest came amid the BJP raking up the issue of an AAP women activist’s suicide. The AAP has denied involvement of any party worker in it.
“The Centre should arrest as many AAP MLAs as it wants but it should first ensure that crime against women is brought to an end,” Gaur said.
The protestors were detained and brought to the Parliament Street Police station before being released.
