Rani, who is originally from Okhla was married to a man from Bulandshahr for eight years. But recently she was given triple talaq by her husband. Even after this, she continued to live with her in-laws and, her husband then agreed to remarry her if she underwent nikah halala with his brother, but she denied. Following which she was allegedly attacked with acid by her brother-in-law for ‘refusing to undergo nikah halala’ with him, later she moved the apex court.
With the help of an NGO she filed a case against her husband for giving instant divorce. She was attacked while she was on her way to register a complaint with the SSP after being allegedly assaulted by her in-laws a day earlier.
Now the Supreme Court issued a notice to UP’s additional advocate general on the woman’s plea seeking security and medical treatment.
Soon after the supreme court’s notice, Bulandshahr police swung into action and provided security to Shabnam. “Her condition is a lot better and she has been discharged from the hospital. She has gone back to her in-laws’ house. Two constables have been deputed for her security.
A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud on Friday said it would hear the triple talaq victim’s plea on September 17. The bench also asked Ashwini Upadhyay, Shabnam’s counsel, to give a copy of her petition to additional advocate general of UP, Aishwarya Bhati.
