Kabul: Two Journalist were gunned down after unidentified gunmen stormed radio Station in northeast Afghanistan sources reported.
The two journalists in their mid-20s were reportedly shot dead on Wednesday inside the studios of Radio Hamsada, which is a private broadcaster based in Taloqan, the capital of Takhar province.
Journalists, reporters are facing nationwide dangers threats across the war-torn country, TOI reports.
So far, nobody has claimed the responsibility for the attack while an investigation has begun said provincial spokesman Jawad Hejri told AFP.
“Two unidentified gunmen entered the radio station’s office at around 6pm on Tuesday. They opened fire on two reporters who were behind their mics during a live programme. Both reporters died at the scene,” he said.
This is the second attack carried out against journalists in Afghanistan.
Earlier last month, Afghan citizen journalist Jawid Noori was brutally hacked to death after he was forcibly taken out from his car and murdered by the Taliban in Farah province in the country’s west.
According to Reporters Without Borders, 2018 has been the deadliest year on record for journalists in Afghanistan.
Meanwhile, Amnesty International described the attack as a “horrific crime” and urged the Afghan authorities to ensure protection for journalists.
“This attack once again highlights the risks journalists continue to face in Afghanistan for just doing their job,” the group’s South Asia researcher, Zaman Sultani, said in a statement.
Afghanistan’s Journalists Safety Committee also issued a statement asking the government to “identify the perpetrators and make sure that justice is served.”
