Air pollution may lead to less fertility and increased pregnancy loss

Hyderabad: Not only respiratory diseases and inflammation can be a result of air pollution but reduced conception rates and increased pregnancy loss can also be attributed to it. Moreover, people who live in urban areas are more prone to air pollution caused diseases.

The poisonous gases released by vehicles and industries, further become a reason for ailments like; irregular heartbeats, development of chronic bronchitis, irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, shortness of breath, coughing and tightness in the chest.

“We can see increasing phenomenon of reduction in sperm count, sperm quality, egg count and egg quality among people who are living in urban areas as compared to rural areas,” says gynaecologist Dr K. Shilpi Reddy as per Deccan Chronicle report. However, infertility is a multifactorial problem that may also occur due to the eating of junk food and obesity.

Another gynaecologist Dr Vimee Bindra says that air pollution is a contributing factor and it is difficult to correlate it to infertility. She adds that exposure to polluted air may lead to miscarriage, low birth and intrauterine death.
