All eyes on Lucknow parliamentary seat

Lucknow: Polling in Lucknow parliamentary constituency has become interesting due to the one-on-one face-off between Union Minister Rajnath Singh and Poonam Sinha, wife of actor-turned-politician Shatrughan Sinha. Poonam Sinha is contesting on Samajwadi Party (SP) ticket with Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP)’s support.

According to News 18, with the aim to dent BJP’s votes and keep Singh confined to his constituency, the Congress is likely to extend support to Sinha’s candidature.

Lucknow constituency is dominated by Muslims with a population of 3.5 lakh. Apart from that, there are four lakh Kayastha voters and 1.3 lakh Sindhi voters in Lucknow. Though the Lucknow parliamentary seat is considered to be a BJP bastion and has been its stronghold since the Atal Bihari Vajpayee era, the fact that Poonam Sinha is a Sindhi while her husband Shatrughan Sinha is a Kayastha is expected to give a major push to her candidature.

Poonam is likely to file her nomination on April 18. Lucknow will go to polls on May 6.
