New Delhi: Uttar Pradesh’s Yogi Government has renamed Allahabad as Prayagraj. While the Yogi Government is strongly criticised on social media and the move is being declared as polarisation politics on one side, on the other side, some people are planning to move to the court. Meanwhile, an interesting revelation has been made regarding Allahabad district and Allahabad city that the government of Uttar Pradesh can only legally rename district but it is not entitled to rename a city because this power lies in the hands of Municipal Corporation. Which means only the district name has been changed but not the city’s name. Thus Allahabad district is now Prayagraj district but Allahabad city is still Allahabad.
This was also revealed in the decision taken by Uttar Pradesh cabinet. The headline of the decision taken in the cabinet states ‘Decision taken to rename district Allahabad as district Prayagraj’. It was mentioned in the letter of Commissioner and secretary revenue council Uttar Pradesh dated 15-10-2018 which stated that demands were being made to rename Allahabad as Prayag or Prayagraj.
