AMU students raise ‘Azadi from RSS’ slogans, video goes viral

Aligarh: The unrest that started last week in Aligarh Mulsim University over Mohammad Ali Jinnah’s portrait on the premises, continues as a result of protests by students that also led exams to be postponed. Meanwhile, a video of students raising ‘Azadi’ slogans has gone viral on social media.

The students in the video can be heard as saying “RSS se bhi, hum leke rahenge Azadi (We want freedom from RSS)”. The video apparently shows students demanding freedom from the right wing. Confirming the sloganeering against saffronization and terrorism, AMU spokesperson, professor Shafey Kidwai said that the slogans raised were not anti-India.

“Students were on an indefinite protest at the Bab-e-Syed gate of the university and were raising the slogan – Bhagwa Rang aur Aatank se Azadi. These are not anti-India slogans, and do not relate to the unity, integrity and sovereignty of India,” he said as per a report by Hindustan Times.

“The students are protesting, so that the police and administration act against the so-called Hindu organisations, which had given provocative speeches and raised highly objectionable slogans. A case was also registered in this context,” Kidwai added.

“The university administration is talking to them. But, when the district administration speaks to them, only then a way-out will be possible,” he said.

Clashes erupted in AMU on May 2 over Jinnah’s portrait on the campus as right-wing elements had demanded the removal of the picture, that had been remained on the campus for decades. AMU students demanding their arrest had alleged the right-wingers were affiliated to Hindu Yuva Vahini.
