Azam lynching: WhatsApp group admins arrested for spreading rumours

HYDERABAD: Bidar police have arrested administrator of a WhatsApp group and 30 others people in connection with the lynching of a 32-year-old techie from Hyderabad on suspicion of child-traffickers.

32-year-old Manoj Kumar and Amar Patil (40) were the admins of a WhatsApp group called ‘Murki Mothers Group’ and was responsible for spreading fake WhatsApp messages to the villagers.

Deceased Mohammed Azam, a software engineer working with Google and his two friends, were visiting their friend Mohammed Bashir in Mandikera village in Karnataka’s Bidar district.

During their visit to the village, they went to sit by a lake where they offered chocolates to some students.

Another accused Amar Patil shot pictures of the Azam and his two friends distributing chocolates to school children. Patil also recorded a video of their car and posted it in the group which spread rumours about a child-lifting gang.

As the men were trying to leave, villagers gathered in groups and an argument started which progressed to full-blown scuffle. The angry mob block the road and started assaulting them. During the attack, Azam was lynched to death on Friday and his two associates severely injured in the incident.

The injured, were Qatar nationals undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Hyderabad.

The incident has sent shock waves across the country many expressing anger and outrage over it.
