New Delhi: Supreme Court on Monday ruled that there can be no blanket ban on protests at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar. The decision came on a PIL challenging a series of prohibitory orders issued by the Delhi Police. The Delhi police have banned individuals and groups from protesting against Government decisions, policies and acts of injustice at Jantar Mantar.
However taking note of the fact that the area is located in close vicinity to important premises such as Parliament, Government departments, residences of Members of Parliament and other residences, the court directed the Delhi Police Commissioner to frame guidelines for issuing permission to stage such protests. It gave two months’ time to the DPC to frame the guidelines.
The guidelines will also regulate protests at Boat Club near India Gate, besides Jantar Mantar.
