Ban on tobacco: Old city secretly producing Gutka in the city

Hyderabad: Indiscreet manufacturing of Gutka through out the city is proving to be a big hindrance against curbing the supply and manufacture of Tobacco.

According to the cops, the manufacturing of tobacco has now gone small scale after the ban on tobacco to avoid being caught where the production is easily done in remote areas or even homes, especially in old city.

“We have observed that gutkha, khaini and zarda are being made in areas such as Katedan, Mailardevpally, Chandrayangutta and Ra jendra Nagar. The units and homes are in remote areas of these neighbourhoods. And this is being done very quietly,” a cop said.

Raids through out the city are being carried out by the task force and law and order units to end the menance and speaking about it, the DCP (South Zone) V Satyanarayana has told that as many as 20 raids have already been conducted so far, several hundred packets of gutkha have also been seized by the Police said the DCP.

“We raided places in Chandrayangutta and Falaknuma on Thursday . During our drive, we found out that manufacturing is being done in houses and smaller units.We are booking cheating cases and cases under sections 272 (adulteration of food or drink) and 273 (sale of noxious food or drink). We have stopped the menace to a large extent, but it is an ongoing process” said the DCP.

The old city alone has thousands of pan shops out of a total 75,000 shops in the city.
