Bihar: Extremists hoist saffron flag on mosque in Samastipur, sparks tension

PATNA: Hundreds of Hindutva miscreants waved saffron flags on the mosque in Samastipur district of Bihar.

According to various media reports, the incident happened on Tuesday during the idol immersion procession when some miscreants in Rosda town of the district gathered at Jama Masjid and mounted the saffron flag and the national flag on it.

A video of the incident surfaced which has gone viral on social media platforms shows a right-wing goon climbing the tower of the mosque and fluttering the saffron flag.

The local residents claimed that the miscreants even burnt part of the premises. Pictures of many chapters of Holy Quran were seen burnt and the pages of the Quranic text strewn all over the floor can be seen.

The video clearly shows the goons hoisting the saffron flag but SP Deepak Ranjan of Samastipur said when the police arrived there, they did not get the saffron flags, only got a tricolor.

Deepak Ranjan was quoted Jansatta.com as saying, “On Tuesday morning, people from a certain community gathered here to disturb the law and order. The police arrived here as soon as we were informed about the incident and the situation is in control.”

To control the situation, the police officers charged at a crowd with batons and did air firing.

Several other people including senior police officers were injured in stone attack. Section 144 has been imposed in the entire area after the incident and the police is operating the force from the neighboring districts.

Internet service has been discontinued in the district. Holidays have been given to schools. The situation is stressful, but in control.
