BJP objects over portrait of Tipu Sultan in Delhi assembly

New Delhi: The galleries of Delhi assembly have been adorned by portraits of revolutionaries, freedom fighters and heroes. The move aims at remembering the brave freedom fighters and inspiring the visitors. The portraits will be unveiled on the occasion of Republic Day. But before that BJP has made an objection to it.

Among those who are being honoured are Tipu Sultan, Ashfaqullah Khan, Bhagat Singh and Subhash Chandra Bose. There are 70 people who have been recognised as national heroes but the portrait of Tipu Sultan has irked BJP members.

BJP MLA OP Sharma termed putting up of a portrait of Tipu Sultan as hurting sentiments of people. He said when Kejrival knew that Tipu Sultan is a controversial personality then why his portrait has been installed. He is not a personality to be placed beside Bhagat Singh, Lakshmi Bai, said Sharma. ‘I will raise the issue in assembly too’ he said.

On the other hand assembly speaker, Ram Niwas Goel said that it is a matter of pride to place the portrait of Tipu Sultan as Tipu had given a tough fight to Britishers. BJP’s objection to his portrait shows its narrow-mindedness, he said.
