Brawl breaks out between farmer leader Ayyakannu, BJP members outside temple in TN

Thoothukudi: Tamil Nadu Farmer leader P Ayyakannu and Bhartiya Janata Party members got involved in a brawl in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruchendur on Thursday. The incident occurred outside premises of Sri Subramania Swamy Temple when Ayyakannu was distributing pamphlets criticizing the Central government.

District Secretary of the BJP’s women’s wing Nellaiyammal and P Ayyakannu, in a video of ANI, seen having a scuffle, when other members also joined them. The BJP member can also be seen showing a footwear towards Ayyakannu. Eyewitnesses then helped in trying to pacify the situation.

When the farmers were distributing pamphlets to a female devotee, Nellaiyammal resisted her to receive it saying: “Don’t take his (Ayyakannu) pamphlet. This Ayyakannu is a fraud.” Seeing this, Ayyakannu abused Nellaiyammal, and then she slapped Ayyakannu in retaliation, igniting a tussle between the two groups.

Ayakkannu told the media that he did not abuse Nellaiyammal and someone else from the team had done it. Nellaiyammal reportedly gave a complaint to the police against the farmer leader, but alleged that the police did not accept her complaint, reports DC.

Ayyakannu had begun a march from Kanyakumari last week. The farmers as part of a 100-day campaign, distributed pamphlets, mentioning their demands including loans waivers, better price for agriculture produce and pension for elderly farmers. The pamphlets also contained few points to condemn the apathy of the Central government.
