Bride auctioned for Rs 22,000 in UP’s Bhagpat

In a series of shocking incidents, a bride was auctioned for Rs 22,000 in a village of Bhagpat district of Uttar Pradesh. The man who purchased the woman could gather Rs 15,500 and made an advance payment. The youth committed suicide after he failed to pay the remaining amount.

A few days ago, Mukesh had married the woman whom he had purchased at an auction by outbidding others. Mukesh ‘bought’ the woman for Rs 22,000 and the marriage was held in a brick kiln at the village. While he paid the agent Rs 15,500 in cash right away, he promised to pay the rest later, his family said.

According to Mukesh’s family the agent, Monu, turned up at their residence four days later after Mukesh’s failure to pay the remaining amount and took his wife away. Mukesh then committed suicide by hanging from a tree.

According to the reports, the agent had another three women with him for auctioning, once the auction was completed after Mukesh’s bid, he took them back. Monu reportedly operates a gang for trafficking girls, and it was not the only case in the area.

Baghpat CO Dileep Singh said Mukesh’s body has been sent for postmortem and the guilty will be punished.
