Bumper business for Agartala jewelers on Dhanteras

Agartala (Tripura) [India], Oct 6 (ANI): A large number of people flocked to jewelry shops across Agartala to buy precious metals on the occasion of Dhanteras on Monday.

The festival is considered as one of the most auspicious days of the year to buy precious metals. Locals in Agartala continued with the tradition and also availed heavy discounts.

The customers did not mind the huge rush at the shops as they did not wish to skip the festivities. People mainly bought gold ornaments on the festival, which is comparatively a new in the region and has been adopted from Northern and Central India.

Arpita Saha, owner of one of the oldest jewelry house in the region, expressed satisfaction over the boost in the sales.

“Eighth to nine years back Dhanteras was not as popular as today. Over the years it is getting popular due to media and is indeed connecting Tripura to the whole of India. It is considered auspicious and I am thankful to my loyal customers that they keep coming back,” said Saha.

Dhanteras, the first day of the Hindu festival Dipawali, is celebrated on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight) in the Vikram Sambat Hindu calendar month of Aaswayuja in the Amaavasyanta Luni-Solar Calendar.

Literally, Dhanteras means ‘dhan’ or wealth, while ‘teras’ is the 13th day of the moon cycle wherein people offer prayers to Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity. [source_without_link]ANI[/source_without_link]
