Lucknow: After Bhartiya Janata Party’s defeat in by-elections for the Gorakhpur and Phulpur parliament seats, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday acknowledged party’s defeat by saying that BJP has ‘paid for its overconfidence’.

When asked about the reason behind the BJP’s defeat, the CM said, “When the elections were announced then SP, BSP and Congress fielded separate candidates. But in the midway, the SP and the BSP entered into a political bargaining for the Rajya Sabha polls. We failed to realize its impact and overconfidence is one of the reasons. We will definitely find out the reasons behind the defeat of the BJP candidates.”

SP’s Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel defeated BJP’s Kaushlendra Singh Patel in Phulpur Lok Sabha bypoll seat. While in Gorakhpur, Samajwadi Party’s candidate Pravin Kumar Nishad won the seat. The election was held after Adityanath and his deputy Keshav Prasad Maurya had vacated their seats for Assembly.

BJP must be bittered with the election result, as Gorakhpur has been held by Adityanath for around a decade before he became state’s chief minister. On the other hand, Phulpur has been formerly held by Keshav Prasad Maurya.

“The results are unexpected and we will definitely review the results. We will formulate the strategy to tackle the political bargaining of the SP and the BSP, which has been forged to stop the progress of the state and country, in 2019 General Elections,” ANI quoted Adityanath as saying in Lucknow.

Meanwhile, the opposition party’s President, Rahul Gandhi congratulated the winning candidates and tweeted, saying “Congratulations to the winning candidates in today’s by-election. The result is clear that the electorate is very angry with the BJP and will vote for the non-BJP candidate who is most likely to win.”
