Can’t confirm report of Nirav Modi’s presence in the US: Says spokesperson

New Delhi: The State Department official has said on Friday that the government of United States is aware of the report of Nirav Modi’s presence in the US but they can’t confirm it. The official told PTI when asked about whether Modi is in New York.

When questioned about if they are helping Indian government to track Modi, the spokesperson said: “We refer you to the Department of Justice for questions on legal assistance to the Indian authorities in relation to their investigation of Mr Modi”. Moreover, the Department of justice denied commenting on the matter,

The maligned diamond businessman, his uncle Mehul Choksi and others are under investigation after Punjab National Bank (PNB) had alleged them of cheating to the tune of over Rs 12,000 crore, with the purported help of some PNB’s employees. Modi had allegedly acquired fraudulent letters of undertaking (LoUs) from the bank to take loans from foreign branches.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) have registered two FIRs in this case. Modi, his family, and Choksi, had left India in January, much before the CBI had received the complaint of fraud from the nationalised bank.
