CBI manages to bring back economic offender who had escaped India

Mohammad Yahya, 47, a fugitive economic offender has been brought back to India, a team of CBI recently flew to Bahrain and brought him back to India nine years after he fled from here. It is the first ever case of India managing to bring an economic offender back.

According to the report published in Times Of India, CBI claimed that he was traced and arrested by Bahrain authorities a few months back on the basis of an Interpol red notice issued against him on India’s request. After the arrest, the government engaged at the highest levels with Bahrain convincing it to deport Yahya to India.

The police of Bahrain detained him a few months back and his identity was confirmed with the help of intelligence agencies and India convinced Bahrain that he needs to be tried in India by providing them with the proof of the offence.

He cheated a couple of banks of Rs 46 lakh in the year 2003. CBI began investigating the scam in 2009 but he had fled by then. After completion of the investigation, a charge sheet was filed against him and he was declared a proclaimed offender by a special CBI court.

Although his loot wasn’t as huge as others accused in this kind of offences like Vijay Mallya, Nirav Modi, Mehul Choksi, Jatin Mehta, Nitin Sandesara and others, the deportation shows government’s seriousness in extraditing and prosecuting people who have fled.

CBI refused to share more details about the banks cheated by him, his business and the purpose of the loan.
