Chairman of India Today Group talks about the current situation in India

New Delhi: Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of India Today Group, Aroon Purie talked about the current situation in the country.

Addressing the India Today Conclave 2018, he said that movies are banned without being seen, people are killed for transporting the animal, roads are renamed, statues are broken down, media is threatened continuously. He also said that India became a divided society. Minorities feel threatened.

Talking about the current situation in the world, he said that the USA is withdrawing from its global leadership role whereas China continues to rise. He also said that in many countries of European Union new extreme nationalism is increasing, on the other hand, Middle East is facing religious extremism and wars. Commenting on Line of Control, he said that it has changed into “Line of no Control” with a continuous exchange of fire.

During his addressed, he pointed out at the threat to democracy. He said, “Freedoms are being diminished by fundamentalism, majoritarianism and general intolerance”.

Speaking about the situation in the country, he said that “Rich have become richer and poor poorer”.
