Chargesheet filed against Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid in JNU event case

A charge sheet was filed today by the Delhi police against former JNU students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and Anirban Bhattacharya and other activists, in the sedition case.

The police said they have evidence to proceed against former JNU Students’ Union leaders Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and other students.

Kumar, Khalid and Bhattacharya were arrested in 2016 in a sedition case for allegedly organising an event in Jawaharlal Nehru University campus against the hanging of Parliament-attack mastermind Afzal Guru.

The police said there is no direct evidence against 36 other accused, including Communist Party of India leader D Raja’s daughter Aprajita, but they can be summoned for questioning.

According to the report published in the DC, the police alleged that Kanhaiya Kumar was inciting, being part of the mob shouting anti-India slogans.

Last week the Delhi police commissioner Amulya Patnaik had asserted that “The case is in the stage of finalisation. The investigation was complex as the team also had to visit other states for taking statements. The charge sheet will be filed soon.”

Kanhaiya Kumar while reacting to the 2,000-page chargesheet said it is “politically motivated”. “If the news is true that a chargesheet has been filed, I would like to thank police and Modi ji. The filing of chargesheet after three years, ahead of elections, clearly shows it to be politically motivated. I trust the judiciary of my country.”
