Chennai: City police foils fringe group plans to disrupt IPL match

Chennai: 10 activists belonging to Tamizhaga Vaazhvurimai Katchi were arrested for attempting to enter the premises of M.A.Chidambaram stadium, where the on-going IPL cricket match is scheduled later this evening.

Earlier this week TVK leader, T. Velmurugan had threatened to abduct IPL players disrupting the on-going IPL matches in the country.

The Police sleuths also prevented disruption after the activists made attempts of entering the Stadium holding black flags. They were stopped from moving any further and were taken into Police custody.

The whole disruption is caused following the boycott call by several political parties and fringe groups over the Cauvery water dispute.

Strict Police protection and security personnel have been deployed at the venue and the hotels where the IPL players are staying.

Nearly 4,000 police personnel including commandos, armed reserve personnel has been deployed at the two venues under the direct supervision of Additional Commissioner of Police M.C.Sarangan.

“We have taken all measures to maintain law and order and ensure the match is held in a peaceful manner. The spectators will be allowed inside the stadium only after thorough frisking,” said a senior police official.
