China calls for peace, denuclearisation in Korean Peninsula

Beijing : China has welcomed the upcoming dialogue summit between North Korea and South Korea while stating that it has called for achieving long-lasting peace and denuclearisation in the Korean Peninsula.

At a press briefing on Thursday, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lu Kang applauded the two Koreas to come at a mutual understanding to fix the date of the inter-Korean summit and hoped that both Pyongyang and Seoul would continue to maintain the momentum of the dialogue.

“As a close neighbor of the Korean Peninsula, China has always been glad to see the DPRK (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) and the ROK (Republic of Korea) hold dialogues, improve relations and promote reconciliation and cooperation, as these are conducive to peace and stability in the region,” Lu was quoted by Xinhua as saying.

He further said that plenty of positive changes have taken place between the two Koreas since the beginning of this year.

Furthermore, Lu called on all international parties to support the inter-Korean summit as well the improvement of the ties between two Koreas. He also underlined that efforts should be made to ensure denuclearisation, peace, stability, development, and prosperity in the Korean Peninsula.

In an endeavour to improve ties and reduce the tensions between them, North Korea and South Korea on Thursday agreed to hold the third edition of the inter-Korean summit on April 27. This will be the first time an inter-Korean summit will be held after 11 years.

There has been a pressing need for denuclearisation of North Korea by Japan, the US, China and South Korea. On the same lines, a proposed summit is expected to take place between US President Donald Trump and Kim in May. (ANI)
