China to its teachers: Please don’t assign homework on WeChat

Shenzhen: Sure, it is convenient and real-time, but WeChat seems to be taking over the actual homework assigning approach by teachers in China and the education authorities are not too happy.

The Department of Education in China has proposed that teachers should be banned from using WeChat, QQ, or such mobile apps to assign homework or ask parents to grade students’ assignments, TechCrunch reported.

Thanks to the internet boom in China, teachers are increasingly relying on communication apps such as WeChat to interact with parents and children through groups.

However, the abuse of digital platforms by teachers doesn’t hold true for all schools in the region. Some of the parents stress that their children continue to use the traditional methods for submitting homework in written form and which involves moderate involvement of the parents.

The proposal by the authorities also seeks to limit the amount of online homework to reduce nearsightedness in children which is a growing concern among parents.
